Hands on an Art Body was a one-night competitive art acquisition held at Oliver Francis Gallery in Dallas. The exhibition was on view May 12–26, 2012, and culminated in a closing reception and competition on May 19. Inspired by the documentary Hands on a Hard Body, in which contestants endure a contest to win a truck, HOMECOMING! offered its “blue-chip collection of contemporary artworks” to the public on unusual terms.
Participants placed their hands on a work of their choice and had to stay in contact with it; the last person still touching a piece took it home. With referees, coaches, and cocktail service on hand, the event tested the relationship between viewer and object and questioned how value, ownership, and collecting operate in the art economy, with ownership decided by “sheer will and determination” rather than money.
