semigloss. Magazine SOUND Issue #6
SOUND — Volume II, Issue II
The sixth and final issue of semigloss. Magazine was released in 2016 as a vinyl record. In her editorial, Sally Glass considered sound art’s place in a visual art magazine, drawing on Brandon LaBelle and Suzanne Delehanty’s essay “Soundings,” with Bruce Nauman, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Maryanne Amacher, Luigi Russolo, and John Cage as touchstones.
The record includes Morehshin Allahyari’s #AsYouScrollDown, built from tweets posted during Iran’s 2009 election protests, with ambient drones by Andrew Blanton; Jeff Gibbons’s appropriated love song with the word “you” replaced by atonal beeps; Peter Lucas’s field-recording collage, an homage to the Voyager Golden Record; and writing by Kenneth Goldsmith on radio. For Wonderwall, a karaoke booth installed during the exhibition Sympathy for the Devil at Hello Project Gallery in Houston, visitors’ isolated vocals were recorded and layered into a track on the album.
The release was accompanied by an immersive installation at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, and B4BEL4B in Oakland, and a listening event at James Turrell’s Twilight Epiphany Skyspace at Rice University.
